What is UX Day?

(U)ser e(X)perience Day is an opportunity for local teens, parents and teachers to learn about some of the great programs available for youth interested in science and technology on Southern Vancouver Island!

Offered in partnership with local youth-serving and STEM-focused community organizations including Rethink Thinking, Battlesnake, HackUVic, FIRST Robotics BC, Science Venture, UVic's Let's Talk Science, and Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair, this FREE event is your opportunity to learn more about some of the great programs available for youth interested in science and technology on Southern Vancouver Island.

Our drop-in STEM Expo format means you can stay for as long or short as you like, with information booths, presentations and snacks available all day! So whether you already know you want to apply for a program, or are simply looking to learn more about what is available for teens in Victoria, there is sure to be something for everyone.

In addition to providing a great opportunity to engage with teen-friendly STEM programs in our community, UX Day also marks the opening of the application period for HighTechU. While you will be able to download applications from the website starting at 10:00AM, if you have specific questions or would like help filling out the forms, HighTechU Ambassadors will available all day to give you a hand!

Where is UX Day?

UX Day will take place on Saturday December 1st from 10AM - 4PM at University of Victoria, Engineering and Computer Science Building.

Where should I park?

Parking will be available across most of the campus on Saturday at a cost of $3.00 for the entire day, though the reccomended lot for the event being Parking Lot 1. Be on the lookout for uX Day signage around ring road to direct you to the lot and then from the lot to the ECS Building.

Who will be at UX Day?

UX Day brings together some of the best local companies and organizations offering Science and Technology opportunities that are a great fit for teens. From Science Venture’s Junior Counsellor Program to Battlesnakes teen-friendly coding competitions, UX Day will have something for everyone whether you are already interested in tech or are simply looking to learn more.

UX Day TeXpo (10AM-4PM)

Join us for the TeXpo taking place all day and find out just how many opportunities there are for Vancouver Island youth interested in Science and Tech. Find out a bit about each of the TeXpo exhibitors below:

BC Cancer Xavier Pelletier High School Internship Program

The High School Internship Program (HSIP) is an 8-week summer program that runs from July-August each summer. These programs have been designed to offer high school students the opportunity to explore cancer research from the front lines and learn the latest techniques being used today in the fight against cancer. Students spend the summer between grade 11 and grade 12 at the Trev and Joyce Deeley Research Centre in the BC Cancer Agency.

Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair

The Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair is one of 13 Youth Science Fair of Canada sanctioned fairs held each spring in British Columbia. Organized by a group of volunteers that comprise the Society for the Advancement of Young Scientists (SAYS) the Vancouver Island fair is held in the Elliott Building at the University of Victoria, aiming to foster scientific inquiry among young people and to provide young scientists an opportunity to demonstrate their findings.

Other exhibitors are: UVic's Let's Talk Science, FIRST Robotics BC, and HackUVic.

Tech Talks (10:10AM-3:35PM)

Becoming Battlesnake presented by Sendwithus
10:10-10:35 & 1:20-1:45

The Battlesnake tournament is a coding competition inspired by the multiplayer version of the classic arcade game Snake. Starting as a small group of colleagues honing their skills, Battlesnake has become BC’s largest programming competition, with over 600 people joining in the tournament which sees teams program and battle their AI Snakes until only one is left slithering. Built for developers of all skill levels, and created to bring developers together in a friendly, co-operative environment, Battlesnake is definitely a cool way to get into the tech scene and this presentation is definitely not one to miss.

Careers in Tech presented by Sendwithus
10:45-11:10 & 1:55-2:20

Presented by the always engaging team from Sendwithus, one of Victoria fastest growing technology companies and the minds behind Battlesnake and Startup Slam, this presentation is your chance to hear from people who have made their lives in our local tech scene. Hear about some of their awesome journeys into the industry and discover just what it takes to make it, or not, in the ever changing world of technology here on the island.

Discover the Hacker in U presented by HackUVic
11:20-11:45 & 2:35-3:00

HackUVic is a hackathon hosted by the UVic Web Design and Development Club at the University of Victoria. It's an event for developers, marketers, entrepreneurs, and designers of all skill levels to build their own project from scratch. Attend this presentation to find out what a Hack-a-thon is all about and how you can take part this year.

Xavier Pelletier High School Internships presented by BC Cancer
11:55-12:25 & 3:10-3:35

Do you want to be part of the exciting world of research? Do you see a world without cancer? Well then join this session to learn how you could work alongside scientists and researchers this summer looking for that cure. Designed to offer students the opportunity to explore cancer research from the front lines, this internship helps students learn the latest techniques in the fight against cancer today and setting the ground for the future.

Test-Driving Technology presented by HighTechU
12:45-1:10 & 3:40-4:00

Do you want to find out more about what HighTechU is actually like as a participant? Facilitated by HighTechU Academy Graduates and Program Ambassadors, this talk will be your opportunity to hear straight from the youth who helped build HighTechU and to discover just what the experience in our different programs will be like for you this year.

Tech Lounge and Mentor Lounge (10AM-4PM)

Tech Lounge presented by Science Venture

The award-winning team behind some of Victoria’s most popular STEM programs for youth is at it again with their UX Day Tech Lounge. This is your opportunity to geek out with the coolest tech toys they have! Also be sure to visit the Science Venture team to find out about their JC program: an opportunity for you to mentor the next generation of Scientist and Engineer during their summer camp program.

Mentor Lounge presented by Rethink Thinking

Rethink Thinking, the innovative team behind the incredibly popular Rethink Summit, is excited to present the UX Day Mentor Lounge, your chance to meet some of the awesome people behind the tech industry in Victoria. This event is open to Parents, Students and Teachers looking to find out more about HighTechU and other STEM programs.

UX Day is held on-campus in the Engineering/Computer Science Building at the University of Victoria on SATURDAY, DECEMBER 1ST from 10AM - 4PM.
